How to Use Analytics to Improve Your GPhC Score Step by Step

Analytics only help when they lead to a better decision. That sounds obvious, but many candidates spend time looking at dashboards without changing what happens in the next revision session. The numbers become interesting without becoming useful.

For the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) assessment, good analytics should answer three questions. Where are marks being lost? Why are they being lost? What should be done differently this week?

If the data cannot answer those, it is decoration.

Start with the right kind of data

The strongest data usually comes from three sources: timed mocks, topic-based question sets, and a mistake log written in plain language. Timed mocks show what happens under pressure. Topic sets show where the knowledge base is thin. The mistake log explains the pattern behind both.

Candidates often rely on percentages alone. A score matters, but the pattern underneath matters more. Seventy percent with mostly reading mistakes is different from seventy percent with weak law knowledge or weak calculations method.

Step 1: sort mistakes by type

After every mock or question set, label each wrong answer. Keep the labels simple.

Knowledge gap. Misread the stem. Changed the answer late. Weak calculation method. Missed the legal detail. Rushed because of time. Fell for the distractor. Those labels start to show whether the real issue is knowledge, judgement, or process.

Without this step, candidates often revise the whole topic when the real problem was how the question was being read.

Step 2: rank weak areas, do not list them equally

Candidates often finish a mock with ten weak topics written down and no clear sense of order. That usually leads to scattered revision.

Rank the weaknesses instead.

Which area loses the most marks most often? Which one is easiest to fix quickly? Which one is likely to appear again in a form that matters? Once the weak areas are ranked, the week becomes easier to plan.

This is where analytics genuinely save time. They stop revision being driven by whichever topic felt worst emotionally.

Step 3: turn the data into a weekly plan

Each week should contain one repair task, one maintenance task, and one timed task.

The repair task goes to the biggest recurring weakness. The maintenance task keeps stronger areas warm. The timed task checks whether the changes are holding up under pressure. That rhythm is more useful than trying to spend equal time on everything.

If a platform provides analytics by topic, use them. If not, build a simple manual version in a spreadsheet or notebook. The sophistication matters less than the honesty.

A realistic scenario

Imagine a trainee scoring reasonably on untimed clinical questions but dropping heavily in full mocks. The first assumption might be that knowledge is still weak. The analytics show something else: most errors appear in the second half of the paper, and many are marked as misreads or rushed choices rather than true knowledge gaps.

That changes the plan. Instead of spending another week re-reading therapeutics, the trainee should work on pacing, section timing, and question control under fatigue. Without the analytics, that shift is easy to miss.

Step 4: review trends, not isolated bad days

One poor set does not mean a topic is collapsing. Equally, one good mock does not mean the problem is fixed. Look for trends across two or three rounds of practice.

Are calculation errors falling? Is law improving only when untimed? Are certain clinical areas still costing marks every week? Trend-based review prevents overreacting to noise.

Step 5: use analytics to cut work, not just add work

This is where many candidates get the process wrong. Every data point becomes another task. The result is a longer to-do list and a more anxious week.

Good analytics should also tell you what to stop doing. If a topic is consistently strong, reduce time there. If one revision method is producing very little improvement, replace it. The purpose of data is selection.

What not to do

Do not chase a perfect dashboard. Do not treat every small dip as evidence that the whole plan must change. Do not keep weak areas vague. And do not assume analytics can replace thought. They are there to guide judgement, not remove it.

For GPhC revision, the candidates who use analytics best are usually the ones who can describe their errors clearly and act on them quickly.
